Small ideas adding in a few new things
As you begin learning at home here are some simple ideas for those who are stressed out about "teaching" at home. Simply spending time showing you care about learning and doing anything will benefit your child. Read with them, have them write/draw, Play games, stop for "recess" breaks, and use some fun online resources will continue their learning. Schools are not asking parents to be teachers but just show your kids that learning even at home is important. The simple things will change your child's life.
Ask what was your favorite part? ( AND JUST LISTEN TO THEM) Kids need us to listen
After that works - add a few different questions (and just listen)
Writing/ Drawing After a few days of reading and questions and you feel like you want to add something try pulling out a pad of paper, notebooks whatever you have and have them write about the story or something they enjoy
- What would you change in the story?
- What was your favorite character? Why?
- What was the problem in the story and how was it solved?
- Write about: books, movies, video games, places they want to go, or draw a picture and add sentences or words about it. Look up writing prompts online for great ideas
- Drawing: Just have them draw their favorite part of the story, or any picture and talk about it or add words if they can.
- Use an educational website that can help with working on grade-level reading ideas (don't have to go crazy have them read online- work on words- and write online if its easier)
- Flashcards
- Card games with numbers, colors, just about anything works
- pick 2 cards add them or subtract or multiply ect..
- Print a few worksheets by grade level - google them print them do them
- Play games- like board games, many fun games have math applications - counting, following directions, deciding where to go
Recess: remember to do this a few times a day- in school kids get 1-3 recesses, 15- 20 so short bursts of fun movement can really help break up the day and help focus kids.
- Dance party: turn on music and dance
- Workout videos for kids
- go outside
- Free play
- running around the house (even if it drives you nuts let a little chaos roam)
Science/ SS:
- Free websites to see new places
- Read books about new ideas
- Watch/ do a science experiment
Perfect timing, we began painting the upstairs and had the girls join us!
- Coloring, creating, painting, drawing with simple things- Art videos from artists
- Youtube a new song for piano, or instruments or rhythms- music classes online
Again you are not expected to be the "teacher" just help your kids know learning is important even at home this will make the biggest change for our kids! When stressed out just keep it simple and that will help you and your kids to extend learning!
